How to put text behind an image

Open Pixly's free Text Behind Image in your browser and add a photo. The person or object in it is cut out automatically; type your text under Text and it sits behind the subject. Click Download image for a full-size picture. Free, no account, no watermark — the photo never leaves your device.

How to put text behind an image with Pixly

3 steps

The three steps

  1. 01

    Add your photo

Go to pixly.app/tools/text-behind-image and drop a photo on the page, or click Choose photo. It works best when one subject stands out against some open background.

  2. 02

    Type your text

Type under Text, or tap a ready-made line. The text sits behind the subject — Behind subject is on by default; In front puts it on top. Drag the text on the photo to move it; font, size and colour are under Style.

  3. 03

    Download the image

Click Download image. You get the picture at full size, with no watermark.

Tips for the text-behind look

  • Big, bold, short text works best: one or two words.
  • Place the text so the subject covers part of a letter, not a whole word.
  • Leave open sky, wall or lawn for the letters to sit on.
  • Add a second line with Layer set to In front for a caption on top.

What to avoid

  • Busy photos with no clear subject — there is nothing for the text to go behind.
  • Long sentences: they stop being readable once the subject covers them.
  • Text the same colour as the background.
