How to make a horizontal video vertical without cropping

Open Pixly's free Horizontal to Vertical Video in your browser and add the video. Pick 9:16: the whole video stays in the frame, with a blurred copy filling the space above and below. Optional: Whole room → push in starts on the whole picture and moves in until it fills the screen, for more movement; it trims the sides at the end. Click Download Reel. Free; downloading needs a free account.

The three steps

  1. 01

    Add your video

Go to pixly.app/tools/horizontal-video-to-vertical and drop an MP4 or MOV, or click Choose video. It opens in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

  2. 02

Pick the shape and the move

Under Shape, pick 9:16 for Reels, TikTok and Shorts, or 4:5 for a feed post. Under Start from, Whole video keeps every pixel and fills the space above and below (Fill: Blur, Matching colour, black or white); Whole room → push in starts on the whole picture and moves in, trimming the sides at the end; Moving frame pans across. Drag the picture or use Zoom to adjust it.

  3. 03

    Download the Reel

Click Download Reel. The video is made in your browser in about the time it lasts and saved as an MP4. The first time, sign in with a free account.

Getting the best result

  • Blur looks most natural for rooms; Matching colour gives a cleaner, designed look.
  • Whole room → push in adds movement that keeps people watching. Use it when the sides of the room don't matter, because it trims them at the end.
  • Add keyframes to aim the camera: drag a ◆ to change its timing, click between two ◆ to set the speed.
  • Use 4:5 (4:5) for the Instagram grid and 9:16 (9:16) for Reels and Stories.

What to avoid

  • Letting Instagram or TikTok crop a wide video: the sides of the room disappear.
  • Stretching the video to fill the screen: it distorts the room.
  • Zooming far into a small video: it gets soft (very small videos are saved at 720p).
